My only problem with the Hungry bear cafe is that I cant seem to stay away from it! Absolutely LOVE their vast variety of meal options including healthy options to choose from. Big portions and absolutely amazing flat white coffee! A lot of effort in the decor too, definitely something different. Highly recommended!

Absolutely fantastic. Big portions, food is fantastic, staff all very friendly and overall I couldn't find a single fault. We go in for something to eat every time we pass though Gorey

I was very disappointed with my recent breakfast experience. I ordered the French toast, which cost around €17.00. With a coffee, the total came to €19.70. Unfortunately, the dish did not feel like good value for money. Instead of a proper French toast with a rich eggy texture, I received one big thick dry slab of bread with a thin coating of egg. The accompaniment was 3-4 small bacon pieces (lardrons, not full rashers) and some maple syrup. There was no additional accompaniments such as fresh fruit or whipped cream, making the dish feel very plain and underwhelming for the price of €16.95. The bread was so thick and dry that I needed to order extra syrup and compote to moisten it. The compote arrived as a small tub of what tasted like frozen berries mixed with syrup. The flat whites arrived in handleless cups that were simply too hot to hold. Therefore, we needed to request cups with handles. Rather than making new flat whites in the appropriate cups, the flat whites were simply tipped into two large mugs. With flat whites, the size of the cup is part of the drink’s presentation so remaking them would be the appropriate thing to do. Overall, the food quality, portion size and presentation did not match the expectations created by a nearly €20 breakfast, and the experience felt poor value. For €17.00, I expected a properly prepared brunch/breakfast item with quality ingredients and generous accompaniments. Instead, it felt like one very basic serving of bread, one egg and a few small bacon pieces. While I completely understand that cafés have many overheads in ireland, the overall quality and presentation did not feel in line with the price charged.

Response from the owner

Hi Julianne
Im sorry to hear you didnt enjoy your visit. I have asked the staff who were looking after your table about the issues you had, they have said they really really tried to make you happy, but to no avail.
You ordered the French toast with streaky bacon and maple syrup, im not sure why you were expecting cream, berries, compote etc. If you wanted that, then you should have ordered that. Our compote is made in house, Its not just frozen berries and syrup. You Say "a few bits of bacon" , Its actually 4 slices of O'Neills Smoked Streaky Bacon, the bread we use for french toast is made in house every day, our eggs are free range. On the issue you had with your coffee and your lack of knowledge, a flat white is usually between 6-8oz, in Hungry Bear its 7.5oz, if you ask for it in a 12oz mug its going to look small.
You really seem to have an issue with price, you arnt paying just for food in a restaurant, its vat, suppliers, wages, electricity, gas, rates, insurance, repairs, depreciation, card fees, rent, etc etc. I get that not everyone is going to enjoy their experience so maybe we are just not your cuppa tea (or coffee)
There is a couple of cheaper options in town that might suit you better.
